The Purpose Behind the Box

Without model or precedent, the idea of a Family Box needed to start with a set of requirements the box had to meet: It had to

- address the digital divide

- be a symbol for uniting families in prevention

- bring families together

- help start talking about a challenging subject

- allow for meaningful conversation

- make discussing a sensitive topic a good experience

- help people rediscover the value of a family dinner

- help kids communicate with their parents

- help parents communicate with their kids

- give parents a better understanding of their kids’ struggles and experiences

- help families express how they feel about each other

- help alleviate stigma and shame

- clarify that substance abuse happens all across the US

- help parents keep up with what their kids already know

- be free to the families
